Ironing Man

5th Annual
Ironing Man Competition
Saturday, 10 February, 2018
Camp Kudzu is a non-profit organization that educates, empowers and inspires children living with type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes.  Camp Kudzu provides overnight summer camp, weekend family retreats and a day-camp for children age 5-17 years.  The Camp sessions provide a much-needed respite from a life of being very different on a daily basis due to the need for insulin injections and blood sugar checks as well as lifestyle restrictions.  At camp sessions, where typically there are over 200 children and adolescents, these kids are treated to opportunities to have fun where the presence of diabetes is no longer a handicap.  It is often the most anticipated activity of the year, scoring higher than birthdays or Christmas.
The Ironing Man Competition is a means to raise funds for scholarships so that no child with type 1 diabetes is prevented from attending due to financial shortfall.  The competition involves a male volunteer who offers to iron clothing and table linens from 9 am to 5 pm on the day of the competition.  There is no cost to have the items ironed, but donations are encouraged and gratefully accepted.  Last year’s competition raised $9,300.00.  There is no overhead cost.  Previously, there have been as many as three competitors, but there is room for YOU.  Each competitor typically is anchored in a different residential apartment or condominium complex which fosters a bit of competition between residential properties.  It is our hope this year to engage the retail businesses within those buildings to become involved with the donation process, as well.
The competitors are self-sufficient, requiring of the residential community only a physical location where they can easily be found for dropping off and picking up items.  The residential communities are encouraged to advertise the event internally effectively enough so that there is participation by the residents.  Progress on the day of the Competition is monitored on social media.  Information about Camp Kudzu can be found on the web at
